Archive for the ‘Sewing’ Category

Well the creators of Try Something New Every Month have decided to take a hiatus this year. I can understand that.  It is quite the undertaking to organize a blog challenge.  But I am disappointed there will not be a set challenge this year. So, I decided to challenge myself.

I did most of the challenges last year. I had plans for some of the last 4 but was unable to complete them.  The last 4 were

  • September – Machine Sewing
  • October- Needlework; embroidery, cross-stitch, crewel, needlepoint
  • November- Papercraft; origami, scrapbook, calligraphy
  • December- Choose your own!

I made a pair of pants for September. But never blogged about them as part of the challenge. Needlework is not my thing. I need to do more research. For paper crafts, I have a band box kit, purchased at a guild UFO aution. And I never decided what to do for December.

This year, I will intersperse the last 4 months categories from 2016 with some ideas of my own. Instead of categories, I researched some of the ideas I had saved from last year. This is what I came up with.
tsnem-2017

  • Rocket Stove
  • Ink to Wood Transfer
  • Skeleton Leaves
  • Photo Letter Collage
  • Luminary’s Out of Cans (metal punch)
  • Scrabble Letter Art
  • Up Cycle Hard Cover Books

That leaves me 2 months unaccounted for. For those I will try some quilt related craft.

Last years goal was to not spend much money and use what I had. For the most part I was able to. The exception being the socks. I needed to purchase everything but the book I borrowed from a friend. I have some of the items needed for most of this year.

I will give you the links to the sites I use for ideas or instructions.

Did you try something new last year?  Let me know. I might add it to my list.

Monday, Sept. 19: A list of your favorite blog posts you’ve written.

I love my dogs.  They mean the world to me.  To keep them warm while hiking, I made them suits.  They hate putting them on but they keep them warm.

My niece got married last fall.  She wanted me to make her wedding gown. She looked beautiful!

This quilt was a bit of a challenge for me.  There were so many ties.  But I loved the way it came out.

Do you have a favorite post of mine? Which one?

Wednesday, Sept. 14: Make a mood board! Are you brainstorming a room re-do, a capsule wardrobe, or already planning for the holidays? Show us your ideas!

I have been taking various on-line classes about fitting and drafting slopers in my quest to sew a perfect fitting pant.  I’m halfway there. I have a pattern drafted. I just need to make the first cut into the fabric.

pants

I have the navy fabric (center). I want them to be waistband free (upper left). Undecided between a button or zipper welt back pocket (upper right and lower left). And a square front pocket (lower right).

If you could design your perfect pant, what would it have? What would you not want?

Tuesday, Sept. 13: If you could switch lives with someone for a day, who would it be? Why?

I really needed to think about this. I love my life and what I do.

The only person I could think of that I would love to switch with is a fabric purchaser for a large fabric store with an unlimited budget.  I just love fabric.  My first job was working at the local So-Fro fabric store.  My manager would purposely schedule me to work when a shipment was expected.  I loved opening those big refrigerator-sized boxes filled with fabric.  It was heaven!

I walk through fabric stores just stroking the fabric. I love the colors, the textures and feel of fabric.  When I’m in a quilt store, I love to help other customers find the right fabric. It’s just fun to put the colors and prints together.

I would love to be able to see and touch all the fabrics.  And not just quilting fabrics. I love all fabric. I could spend hours walking through the aisles of home dec fabrics and fashion fabrics.  I love visiting one of my nieces.  She lives in New York City.  I love to spend time wandering around the garment district.  Seeing all the fabrics and trims.  It’s such a magical place for me.

I have no pictures for this post. I dropped my phone while hiking this weekend. It fell down between the boulders on my way to Mt Adams. It still there today. I’m off to get a new phone today.

Monday, Sept. 12: Three books! One you just read, one you’re currently reading, and one you want to read.

patternmaking

I have been looking for an inexpensive book on pattern making. Most of the books out there are textbooks. I wanted to find one I could recommend to students in my pant making class without the cost of a textbook.

Patternmaking by Dennic Chunman Lo has just enough information without reading like a text book.  It also doesn’t have a text book price!

The illustrations are great.

A fun read for me is Nemesis by Catherine Coulter.  It is the 19th book in her FBI thriller series.  I have read all of them.  I always look forward to the next one.  I have all of them.  I even re-read them a couple of times.

They are both available on amazon.

I’m not sure what I will read next. What  would you recommend ?
